No-El in 2022 is not the answer
Ben Punongbayan, Chairman and Founder of Buklod, a national political party, expressed strong disagreement with the insinuation uttered by a member of the House of Representatives that the May 2022 national elections may have to be postponed because of the COVID-19 contagion.
First of all, it is much too early to make that kind of judgement. But much more than that, the sentiment expressed by the congressman betrays the general predilection of our legislators of serving their own self-interest and setting aside the primacy of the national interest.
The comment that citizens expect from right thinking government leaders in this regard is to express to the election body to find alternative ways to make the election happen on the date scheduled and as already known nationwide.
The nation expects our leaders to be emphatic not to postpone the elections.
Such is exactly what is occurring in the US now where their own scheduled elections are ongoing amid more than 200 thousand American COVID19 deaths and increasing at a rate which is not slowing down.
That sentiment to postpone the scheduled elections clearly explains another issue, a long-standing one – the long inaction to implement the fundamental principle expressed in our Constitution prohibiting political dynasties.
Article II Section 26 of the 1987 Constitution says “The State shall guarantee equal access to opportunities for public service, and prohibit political dynasties as may be defined by law.”
That Constitutional declaration remains unimplemented because the enabling law required upon our legislators to enact has never been given any meaningful movement for passage after 33 long years. That implementing law is being held intentionally because it stands very strongly against the self-interest of our government leaders, Punongbayan said.
Punongbayan expresses a wish for all well-meaning Filipinos to convince our electorate to change the present personalities in our government by electing new leaders who have fresh, useful and workable ideas to get us out of the morass we are presently embedded in.
